7 important points about the wisdom teeth removal process
Wisdom teeth: what are they?
Large molars known as wisdom teeth often erupt between the ages of 17 and 24. On both the upper and lower jaws, they are situated at the very back of your mouth.
Most of the time, wisdom teeth erupt without causing you any issues. However, wisdom teeth can become “impacted” and require extraction or, in extreme cases, surgery if there is not enough room for them to erupt.
Do wisdom teeth belong to everyone?
Although four wisdom teeth are common, some people only have three, two, one, or none at all. To find out if you have wisdom teeth and how many you have, your dentist can take an x-ray
Concerning Wisdom Teeth
What signs indicate that my wisdom teeth are erupting?
Wisdom teeth usually erupt smoothly and without any problems. On the other hand, insufficient room can result in wisdom teeth becoming wedged in, or “impacted,” which can lead to infection and inflammation in the tissue around the tooth.
You can feel generally sick and experience symptoms including swollen, red gums and jaw stiffness. Sometimes a cyst develops around the impacted wisdom tooth, causing harm to the gums, teeth, and surrounding bone. Infections can be treated with medications, but wisdom teeth that are impacted usually need to be pulled.
Prior to the Wisdom Teeth Extraction Procedure
Before my wisdom teeth are extracted, what happens?
Your dentist at Oakstone Dental will walk you through the process of getting your wisdom teeth removed and address any questions you may have regarding the treatment (including if surgery may be necessary), the time it will take to have the teeth out, and what to expect afterward. In addition, they will need to know about any drugs you are taking at the moment, any surgical or anesthetic-related concerns you may have, and any history of severe bleeding. Sometimes, an x-ray of your mouth will be taken before the procedure.

Before having my wisdom teeth removed, may I eat or drink anything?
This will vary depending on whether a general or local anesthetic is used for your surgery (more on this below). Patients are allowed to consume some fluids and a light meal up to one hour before to operation when under local anesthesia. You often have to fast for six to twelve hours before wisdom tooth surgery if you’ll be under general anesthesia. Consult your dentist for information on what you can eat and drink prior to having your wisdom teeth removed.
Throughout the Wisdom Teeth Extraction Process
What is involved in the surgery to remove wisdom teeth?
The procedure for extracting wisdom teeth is often the same as that of extracting any other type of tooth. The dentist might occasionally need to make an incision and sew it shut.
How much time does it take to remove a wisdom tooth?
A wisdom tooth extraction typically takes 30 to 60 minutes to complete. It will take longer, though, if you are having wisdom teeth surgery under general anesthesia. This will be discussed with the oral surgeon we may recommend to you.
Will the extraction of my wisdom teeth require a general or local anesthetic?
The majority of wisdom tooth extraction procedures involve local anesthesia, which numbs the gums and teeth to prevent pain. This makes it possible for the process to happen while you are awake.
Consequences of your wisdom tooth extraction procedure
How will I feel following the extraction of my wisdom teeth?
Typical symptoms that many people encounter following the extraction of wisdom teeth include:
Drowsiness: For the next one to two days, if you’ve been under sedation or general anesthesia, you should plan on having someone help you at home instead of driving.
Pain: To deal with any pain you may suffer following surgery, your dentist will probably advise taking medications for up to a week.
Bleeding: Following surgery, it’s normal to experience some bleeding. Your dentist will go over your choices for treating bleeding after surgery.
Jaw swelling: You can apply ice right away after surgery if you have jaw swelling. Four to five days should see the swelling go down.
Does the operation to remove wisdom teeth come with any dangers or complications?
Although wisdom teeth extraction issues are uncommon, your dentist will go over any possible dangers or side effects with you.
