Your dentist will usually require two or three appointments to complete the therapy and will use local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort during the procedure.
What will the tooth be like afterwards?
In the past the tooth would often darken after treatment. However with modern approaches it does not usually happen.
It is usually advised that the tooth have a porcelain crown placed on it so it strengthens the tooth.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does root canal therapy involve?
Root canal therapy becomes necessary when the nerve and blood supply inside the tooth, known as the pulp, becomes infected due to decay or injury. The treatment involves removing the infection from the root canal, thoroughly cleaning the canals, and then filling them to prevent further infection. This procedure requires considerable time and skill but should feel no different to having a regular filling. We typically complete it over two or three appointments.
What will the tooth be like after treatment?
In the past treated teeth often darkened after root canal therapy. With modern techniques this rarely happens. We usually recommend placing a porcelain crown on the tooth to strengthen it and ensure long-term protection.
How does root canal therapy protect my tooth?
Root canal therapy removes the infection and seals the root canal system, preventing reinfection. By preserving your natural tooth and avoiding extraction, the treatment supports chewing function, maintains facial structure, and avoids the need for more invasive restorations.
