Emergency Dental

Dental pain or an unexpected injury can be unsettling. When someone is worried or uncomfortable, our priority at Oakstone Dental is to provide clear guidance and steady care. We have supported the Oakleigh and surrounding communities for more than 30 years, and during that time we have seen how important it is for patients to feel safe, informed, and looked after when a problem arises.

Many people contact us feeling anxious, uncertain, or unsure about the next step. Our team has been together for a long time, and we approach each situation with patience and honesty. We take the time to listen, understand what you are experiencing, and help you navigate the best course of action without rushing you.

When to Contact Us

If you are in pain or believe something isn’t right, we encourage you to call us as early as you can during our opening hours. We always do our best to see genuine emergencies within 24 hours because we know timely care matters.

If your concern occurs outside our hours, the Royal Melbourne Dental Hospital is available for after-hours emergency support. We guide patients there when needed so they are not left without help.

Common Emergency Situations

Over the decades, we have supported many patients through a wide range of urgent concerns. Some of the more common situations include:

Toothache or Sensitivity

A persistent ache may indicate decay or infection. Pain medication can provide temporary relief, but an examination is encouraged to identify and treat the cause.

Facial Swelling or Abscess

Swelling can indicate infection. If you notice it or feel unwell, contact us. Severe swelling affecting breathing or accompanied by fever needs urgent care.

Broken or Cracked Teeth

Teeth can break during falls, eating, or due to old fillings. This exposes sensitive areas and causes discomfort. Temporary pastes may help until you see a professional.

Knocked-Out Teeth

A knocked-out adult tooth is time-sensitive. Handle it by the crown only. If possible, place it back in its socket. If not, store it in milk and seek help.

Loose Crowns or Bridges

If a crown or bridge is loose, keep it safe for your appointment. Chemists have temporary products to hold it briefly, but avoid eating or sleeping with it.

Our Approach to Emergency Care

We have always based our care on treating people the way we would want to be treated. This means approaching every emergency with respect, calm communication, and practical solutions.

When you arrive, we begin by understanding what has happened and how you are feeling. We examine the area, take any necessary X-rays, and talk openly about what we see. You will always hear every option available, along with the pros, cons, and costs. You are supported in whichever option you choose, without pressure.

Our focus during an emergency appointment is to relieve discomfort, stabilise the problem, and help you leave feeling more at ease than when you arrived.

A Team You Can Rely On

Patients often tell us they appreciate the familiar faces when they walk through our doors. Many of our staff have been with Oakstone Dental for decades, and this continuity helps patients feel comfortable in situations that may otherwise feel stressful.

Our environment has been carefully set up to be calm, uncluttered, and supportive. Little touches—such as pillows, a gentle approach, and a clear explanation before any step—make the experience steadier and less intimidating.

What to Do Before Your Appointment

Avoid hot, cold, or hard foods that make pain worse

Use pain relief as recommended by a pharmacist

If an adult tooth has been knocked out, store it in milk

Pick a time that suits your schedule.

These measures are temporary. A proper evaluation is still necessary to prevent the issue from worsening.

Here When You Need Us

Emergency dental situations rarely occur at a convenient time. Our role is to help you through them with steady hands and clear advice. If you’re unsure whether your situation is urgent, we encourage you to call — we will guide you.
