Sleep Apnoea and Snoring

Is Snoring or Sleepiness a Problem?

Snoring is a common complaint, affecting up to 45% of adults and is a sign of airway obstruction. Snoring can be a source of great frustration for people sleeping close by and can disrupt the quality of sleep of the snorer, and the others leading to excessive daytime sleepiness.

Sleep Apnoea

Snoring can also be a sign of Sleep Apnoea. Sleep Apnoea is a serious medical disorder linked to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

Some typical questions we would ask?

Do you snore?
Do you have excessive daytime sleepiness?
Has anyone seen any disturbances to your breathing during sleep such as pauses, gasping or choking?
Do you feel well and refreshed in the morning?

If you think you would answer yes to two or more of the above questions, our dentists can discuss with you the option of a dental appliance (a clear plastic type of mouthguard) called a dorsal appliance. This device is designed to help reposition your jaw during sleep and may be a suitable treatment option for snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnoea. A thorough consultation is required to determine your suitability and to discuss all the benefits, risks, and alternatives.
